Sirawai mayor ‘shocked’ after being tagged again in ‘narco list’

Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte Mayor Gamar Janihin said he was “shocked” upon knowing he was one of the mayors tagged in President Rodrigo Duterte’s so-called “narco list” released in Davao City Thursday, March 14.

Janihin was one of the 35 mayors linked to the illegal drug trade. Others in the list were seven vice mayors, one provincial board member, and three congressmen.

“I was saddened to hear my names being included in the list despite being cleared by concerned agencies,” Janihin in a phone interview Sunday said.

The mayor was previously linked to illegal drug activities in a “narco list” released by Duterte in 2017.  He denied the accusations that he is a protector of drug syndicates and even expressed the willingness to go to jail if proven guilty.

The mayor said he had already complied with what was asked from the investigations conducted.

“I am already cleared of the allegations of any possible drug links,” Janihin said.

He said all the certifications from Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the provincial government of Zamboanga del Norte had cleared him of any connections to illegal drugs.

“Nakakalungkot isipin na ganun pa rin ang lumabas kahit na na-clear na ako sa mga akusasyon,” the mayor intimated.

He said the local government under his leadership supports Duterte program against corruption, illegal drugs, and criminalities.

“I am very supportive of President Duterte’s programs,” he said.

He ordered all barangay captains in the town and the local police to intensify the anti-illegal drug operations.

That being said, the mayor has appealed to the president to have the information about him “direct from the ground.”

“I suspect that my political opponents are the ones peddling lies about me that may have reached the circle of the president,” he explained.

Proof of his innocence was the clearance he got from the police before he was considered as a PDP-Laban candidate, the mayor added.

Janihin is seeking a third term as mayor in the coming mid-term polls under PDP-Laban. (Antonio M. Manaytay-Mindanao Sun)
