Italian priest kidnapping suspect killed in law enforcement operation

IPIL, Philippines – Justice served, finally, nine years after kidnap victim Italian priest died in 2012. One of the kidnapping suspects was killed in a law enforcement operation in Zamboanga City.

Police Col. Thomas Joseph Martir, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) director, said the slain kidnapping suspect was Masdal Jakaria, allegedly a follower of the Kumander Muloc and Waning Abdusalam kidnapping group based in Zamboanga Sibugay.

Martir said the lawmen were on law enforcement operation by way of service of search warrant June 12 at around 1 a.m. in Barangay Mampang when the suspect allegedly opened fire at the policemen, prompting the latter to return fire.

The police recovered from Jakaria a .45-caliber pistol and empty shells of the same caliber, and some bomb-making components consisting of five pieces blasting caps and detonating cord.

Jakaria was a suspect in the kidnapping of Fr. Giancarlo Bossi on June 10, 2007 in Barangay Bulawan, Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Bossi was on July 19 of the same year in Karomatan, Lanao del Norte. He died in Italy in 2012 due to lung cancer. (km)
