ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE – The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Dapitan declared Tuesday, May 7 “persona non grata” or “undesirable person” a Manila-based news anchor and commentator for apparently mocking, and insulting the city and its people.
The city councilors supported unanimously the resolution authored by Councilor Jasmin Hamoy declaring Erwin Tulfo an “undesirable person” following Tulfo’s visit to the city last April 28.
Tulfo, who was joined by city mayoralty candidate Evelyn Uy, was in the city to campaign for the party-list group Anti-Crime and Terrorism through Community Involvement and Support (ACT-CIS). Uy is running against imcumbent City Mayor Rosalina Jalosjos.
During his meeting with local media commented that Dapitan is not fit to be a city because of the absence of Jollibee. He chided that the city has only one bank, which is a rural bank, and the only attraction is the Jalosjos-owned Dakak Park and Beach Resort. He failed to mention that Dapitan is also a host to another Jalosjos-owned Fantasy Land and Glorietta Complex.
Tulfo, who is known for his acid tongue in attacking public officials except the Duterte government, was mocking the Dapitan City Police Station.
“Pati ‘yung police station, gusto kong maiyak nung nakita ko. Tinanong ko ‘yung driver kung d’yan ba ‘kinulong si Rizal. Hindi naman daw. ‘Estasyon ho ng police ‘yun.’ Akala ko estasyon ng guardia civil.”
The city council had cited several angry reactions of the residents to Tulfo’s comments, which appeared to be a commentary against the sitting officials.
Tulfo had seemed to have missed several significant facts about Dapitan. It was declared a a city because of its historical value. He also erred when he said there was only one bank. The city has four banks while the city police office is about to be transferred to their new office at the City Hall. (jm)
